Solar Electric Initiative
The Solar Electric Initiative (SEI), was established in the summer of 2008 to help develop solar power in rural Sierra Leone communities with no electricity and little prospect of getting any. As the community chose, we are initiating the project with classroom lighting and a computer lab run off solar panels at the Kamakwie Secondary School. We expect to implement this in 2009 and anticipate subsequent incremental steps to help light up rural Sierra Leone by utilizing its abundant and free sunshine. contact Leslie McKeon

Bramaia Lanje Project
Improvement of transport and opportunities for farmers and thus healing their self esteem. The project will start with 10 families of about 10 persons, in expectation of the arrival of donated trucks for transport. The families are eager to get the opportunity to start: adapt their crops on market demands and create more harvests per year, so their ideals of a future, education and storage facilities will be realised one day. www.bramaia-lanje.com

Book: Green Oranges on Lion Mountain by Emily Joy (Dr. Gail Haddock) Gail has written about her experiences as a VSO doctor at Serabu Hospital in Sierra Leone.  It is a delightful account of life as a volunteer, life as a single woman in the Third World, life as a doctor in a remote hospital, and life in a country on the verge of a brutal civil war.  Gail doesn't sugarcoat the realities of life in Salone in the early 90s, but she doesn't exclude the lighter side of life there that many of us fondly remember.  Many parts of the book are just plain funny.  All proceeds go to support medical projects in Sierra Leone.  Price includes shipping.  To order, contact Peggy at info@fosalone.org.   www.eye-books.com/
